About WOVO – the World Organisation of Volcano Observatories

The World Organisation of Volcano Observatories (WOVO) is a network of – and for – volcano observatories worldwide. Members are institutions engaged in volcano monitoring, particularly those with a formal mandate to provide scientific advisory to authorities and/or warning the public about hazardous volcanic activity.

The objectives of WOVO are to connect, support, and advocate for its members. To achieve its goals, WOVO has three primary programs:

  • The Volcano Observatory Best Practices (VOBP) conducts periodic international workshops that convene staff from global observatories to exchange experiences and propose recommendations for optimising operational efficiency and responding effectively to volcanic eruptions and unrest.
  • WOVOdat is a comprehensive global database on volcanic unrest, designed to investigate pre-eruptive processes and, ultimately, enhance our eruption forecasting capabilities.
  • Cross-disciplinary initiatives where WOVO provides representation and advocacy for volcano observatories, including Early Warning initiatives, or the Volcanic Ash and Aviation Hazards (VAAH) program where WOVO represents and advocates for observatories within the aviation and meteorological communities.
