HVO was founded in 1912 by Thomas A. Jaggar, Jr., and has been a permanent part of the U.S. Geological Survey since 1948. HVO is responsible for monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes in Hawaii. The volcanoes considered active include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, Lo`ihi (submarine), Mauna Kea, and Haleakala (Maui).<\/p>\n
