New VONA structure and ICAO requirements (December 2025)
In 2025 a survey was conducted through SVOs to investigate their level of awareness on the ICAO legislation and their current operations for the issuance of VONA, the aviation colour code usage and, in general, their connections with VAACs and the aviation sector.
An online meeting is expected to be held on 3 December to discuss the new VONA structure and, more in general, the new requirements that ICAO has set in the latest version of the IAVW handbook.
State Volcano Observatories, being the primary contributor to the IAVW functionality, are required to know the new recommended actions for preparing and implementing needed changes.
Paula Acethorp (CAA New Zealand) – as representative of the ICAO Met Panel – and Dave Schneider (USGS Alaska) – as SVO representative within IAVW and AG-VSA member – will present the novelties within the IAVW Handbook and also the standard procedure for ICAO information dissemination.
Some technical solutions currently implemented at USGS Volcano Observatories and New Zealand SVO will also be presented.
At the beginning of the meeting the results from the survey will be presented to provide a general context of knowledge and awareness of SVOs role within IAVW framework.
The meeting will be on MS Teams on Wednesday 3 December at two different times to accommodate a wide range of timezones:
08.00 UTC with Paula Acethorp and
16:00 UTC with Dave Schneider
The agenda is the following:
Introduction and rationale of the meeting
Survey results
SVOs, IAVW and the VONA
Experience at SVOs (USA and New Zealand)
Questions and discussion
The recorded meeting will be available on WOVO’s website.
