INTRODUCTION
Laboratory for Earthquake Chemistry applies chemical approaches to investigate various activities in the crust which occur in relation to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Researches being carried out are interdisciplinary between chemistry, geophysics and geology which include theoretical, experimental and observational studies necessary to detect precursory phenomena of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The groundwater observation network has been developed for earthquake and volcanic eruption prediction researches. Among 12 monitoring stations located mainly in southern Kanto and Tokai districts, 3 stations are operating for the monitoring of volcanic activities of Izu-Oshima volcano and Higashi-Izu volcano group. There, new techniques for monitoring chemical composition of fumarolic gas and hot spring water are being tested. In addition, volcanic gases are collected from all over the world and analyzed using various instruments for isotope geochemistry. Origin and transport mechanism of magma are investigated.
