INTRODUCTION

The Geographical Survey Institute, which comes under the Ministry of Construction, Government of Japan, is a central organization of surveying and mapping and conducts the establishment of geodetic control network and production of national basic maps.

The Crustal Dynamics, Topographic and Geographic Departments are engaged in several kinds of works related to the prediction of Volcanic eruption.

The Crustal Dynamics Department is in charge of the geodetic work, while the Topographic and Geographic Departments are responsible for the production of basic and land use maps of volcanoes.

Observations and researches of volcanoes in the GSI are conducted under the 4th Project of the Prediction of Volcanic Eruption endorsed by the Geodesy Council in July, 1988.

Their details are as follows:

1. 12 volcanoes designated as "Active volcanoes which should be intensively observed and investigated":

Geodetic surveys such as levellings, distance measurements, gravity and GPS surveys in Izu-Oshima and other volcanoes. Measurements of the distribution of surface temperature (if necessary).

2. 23 volcanoes designated as "Active volcanoes and volcanoes which have potential to explode":

Geodetic surveys, including GPS survey, and measurements of the distribution of surface temperature in volcanoes suspected of eruption.

3. Other volcanoes:

Surveillance by emergency survey team.

4. Production of topographic maps and others:

Volcano basic maps of Unzen and other volcanoes and volcano land use map of Sakurajima volcano have already been produced as the basic data for the prediction of volcanic eruption.
